Happy Valentine's Day!!!

The History of Valentine's Day

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial -- which probably occurred around 270 A.D -- others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'christianize' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification.

The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman.

These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. The Roman 'lottery' system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February -- Valentine's Day -- should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.

According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)

Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap".

They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go go go
I'd rather be at home with ray
I ain't got seventeen days Coz there's nothing
There's nothing you can teach me
That I can't learn from mr hathaway
I didn't get al lucky at class
But I know it don't come in a shot glass
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go go go
The man said 'why do you think you here'

Final Goodbye

Final Goodbye Lyrics by Rihanna

I never should of waited so long to say
What I’ve always known since the very first day
Thought that you would stay forever with me
But the time has come to leave

[Chorus]
Before we turn out the lights and close our eyes
I’ll tell you a secret I’ve held all my life
Its you that I live for, and for you I die
So I’ll Lay here with you ’til the final goodbye

Hold, draw me close, close to my lips
Listen intently as I tell you this
Outside the world wages its wars,
I’ll rest in peace as long as you know

[Chorus]
Before we turn out the lights and close our eyes
I’ll tell you a secret I’ve held all my life
Its you that I live for, and for you I die
So I’ll Lay here with you ’til the final goodbye

[Bridge]
Promise you our love will carry on
Until you turn eternal, we belong

[Chorus:]
Before we turn out the lights and close our eyes
I’ll tell you a secret I’ve held all my life
It’s you that I live for, and for you I die
So I’ll lay here with you till the final goodbye

His respectful lips for the last time
And spell out the lyrics to love in the sky
Its you that I live for and for you I die
So I’ll lay here with you till the final goodbye
Goodbye

This is the first child for the 27-year-old singer and her music executive husband.

"Christina and Jordan are proud to announce the birth of their son Max Liron Bratman. He is a beautiful, healthy baby boy!" a rep for the couple tells PEOPLE. "Mom is resting and doing well!"

Despite various media reports that Aguilera had her baby on Friday, Max – 6 lbs. 2 oz. and 20.5 inches long – arrived late Saturday night in L.A.

In a message later posted on her official Web site Sunday, Aguilera tells fans, "Today is a very joyful and special day for Jordan and I as we welcome our first son into this world.

" The singer also posted a special video of her song "Save Me from Myself," with footage from the couple's personal wedding video.

"Just a little something to say 'thank you' for your undying love and support," writes Aguilera.

"It is in no small part because of you that I live such a blessed and wonderful life!"

Nicole Richie, Joel Madden Have a Girl

Nicole Richie and her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden are the parents of a daughter, the couple's rep at Handprint Entertainment tells PEOPLE.

Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz.

"The beautiful healthy baby girl left the hospital with her ecstatic parents," says the rep, who confirmed the birth to PEOPLE exclusively.

Richie, 26, said she was pregnant in July, telling Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America: "I would really want to be someone my child would look up to.

" Later, Richie, who had a famously wild childhood, said the idea of parenthood had made her more mature. "When I found out that I was pregnant, there was just something inside of me that felt a responsibility to mend any issues that I've had with my parents in the past, because, listen, I've put them through a lot," she said.

As for Good Charlotte frontman Madden, 28, he told PEOPLE in November he was looking forward to being a dad. "Having a baby is the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me, and to us," he said.

And the new parents plan to teach their little one the value of generosity. In December, the couple started the Richie Madden Children's Foundation to help the less fortunate. "We want our child to be a part of the community, and to know that there's a responsibility to help the community," Madden said at the time.

The couple have yet to set a wedding date, but in September Madden said "marriage is in our future" – he just wasn't sure when. "Right now our priority is our family and is the baby," he said. "That's all we've been thinking about. We are in love and are really happy."

Congratulation guys.. ;)

Relationships

How to Heal a Broken Heart There's no two ways about it: as the old song goes, breaking up is hard to do. If you find yourself hurt, bitter or angry after a breakup, Dr. Phil has advice on how to heal the heartbreak.

  • Dumped and hurt? Dumped and angry? Either way, take these steps to regaining your strength and happiness.

  • Grief is a process to go through, not a destination in which to wallow. In a process, you keep putting one foot in front of the other. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months...each little step is part of the process of healing your heart.

  • What are your real intentions? Are you trying to move past the breakup, or are you hoping to get back with your ex? You won't move on until you've truly accepted that the relationship is over.

  • We all have an internal conversation with ourselves. Since they shape our outlook, be careful about the language you choose. Words like "nightmare, terrible, and horrible" don't accurately describe what you go through after a breakup. When you use catastrophic terms, you're bound to spend time dwelling on the negative. Spend more time focusing on what you can do.

  • You can't get over being hurt until you know you've been heard. Give yourself permission to express your anger, your sadness — whatever you may be experiencing. It's better to be angry with someone else than to blame yourself. Allow yourself to own your feelings.

  • Don't get in a situation where you'll look back someday and feel humiliated. Driving past your ex's house, making dozens of phone calls, e-mailing nonstop...that's not the way to let go of the past.

  • And finally, learn to trust again. Whenever you get involved in a relationship, you know there's risk. Don't let a bad experience keep you from living your life to the fullest.

Lack of sleep may be deadly

Lack of sleep may be deadly, research shows
September 24, 2007 06:39:50 AM PST

People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to a large British study released on Monday.

Although the reasons are unclear, researchers said lack of sleep appeared to be linked to increased blood pressure, which is known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke.

A 17-year analysis of 10,000 government workers showed those who cut their sleeping from seven hours a night to five or less faced a 1.7-fold increased risk in mortality from all causes and more than double the risk of cardiovascular death.

The findings highlight a danger in busy modern lifestyles, Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Warwick's medical school, told the annual conference of the British Sleep Society in Cambridge.

"A third of the population of the UK and over 40 percent in the U.S. regularly sleep less than five hours a night, so it is not a trivial problem," he said in a telephone interview.

"The current pressures in society to cut out sleep, in order to squeeze in more, may not be a good idea -- particularly if you go below five hours."

Previous research has highlighted the potential health risks of shift work and disrupted sleep. But the study by Cappuccio and colleagues, which was supported by British government and U.S. funding, is the first to link duration of sleep and mortality rates.

The study looked at sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 years at two points in their lives -- 1985-88 and 1992-93 -- and then tracked their mortality rates until 2004.

The results were adjusted to take account of other possible risk factors such as initial age, sex, smoking and alcohol consumption, body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The correlation with cardiovascular risk in those who slept less in the 1990s than in the 1980s was clear but, curiously, there was also a higher mortality rate in people who increased their sleeping to more than nine hours.

In this case, however, there was no cardiovascular link and Cappuccio said it was possible that longer sleeping could be related to other health problems such as depression or cancer-related fatigue.

"In terms of prevention, our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around seven hours per night is optimal for health," he said.

Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston Have a 'Deep Friendship'

Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston Have a 'Deep Friendship'

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 06, 2007 05:30 PM EDT
By Kristin Boehm

Brad Pitt says he is still friends with ex-wife Jennifer Aniston – and handled their breakup the best way he knew how.

"Jen and I still maintain a deep friendship and have a lot of life together that isn't erased in any way," the actor tells V magazine of the couple's four-and-a-half year union, which ended in 2005.

"I don't know how better to have handled [the split]. My view was, this was no one's business in the end – at least in matters of the heart," he says. "The thing guiding me then was, you don't know how many days you have, and you need life to be everything you need it to be."

Despite the intense attention to the couple, Pitt says he and Aniston did their best to ignore the frenzy. "The most important thing about that time was for Jen and me to figure out if – how do I put it? – if we didn't want to go on without any outside influence. Is this where we got off? Have we taken this as far as we wanted to go?"

Adds Pitt, who now has four children with Angelina Jolie: "Those questions had to be answered before an attraction to Angie could be answered."

Of his relationship with Jolie, 32, Pitt, 43, recalls fondly their time together when he was in Canada filming The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which recently debuted at the Venice Film Festival.

"Angie was pregnant. It was a very nice time for us," he says. "We stayed out in the woods by a river. We were in a big log cabin. So personally, it was a magical time."

Joel Madden says He Will Marry Nicole Richie

Joel Madden Says He Will Marry Nicole Richie
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2007 02:45 PM EDT

By Kim Peiffer

Joel Madden says there is no need to worry – marriage to Nicole Richie is all part of the master plan.

"Obviously, marriage is in our future," Madden told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday. "I don't know when or where or how, but right now our priority is our family and is the baby."

The singer added: "That's all we've been thinking about. We are in love and are really happy."

Richie, 25, and Madden, 28, first announced on Good Morning America in late July that they are to become parents. "Yes I am. We are. I'm almost four months," Richie told the show's Diane Sawyer. The couple has been dating since earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Good Charlotte frontman is not shy about his enthusiasm for impending fatherhood. "I'm excited. We are all really excited about it," he told Seacrest. "Its the best thing that has ever happened to us. It's awesome."

Do they know if it is a boy or a girl? "No, we are waiting. We don't even know. So right now it's an it. Which sounds wrong. We call it the baby. When we talk to it, it's a you," Madden said.

Madden revealed that the baby has already started kicking, and the couple is getting everything ready, including the nursery. "We've started it'," he said. "I already went to Target and got a stroller and a playpen."

Brother Benji Madden chimed in to say how impressed he is with the couple: "They are doing really good. They always know what stage they are at."

Sexually Assaulted

THEY thought someone had dropped off a bag of books in front of their offi ce in Petaling Jaya Utama.
Instead, the sports bag contained the lifeless and nude body of a girl, aged between six and nine, who had been subjected to unimaginable horror.

A post-mortem at Kuala Lumpur Hospital last night found that she had been brutally assaulted. Traces of brinjal and cucumber were found in her anus and vagina.

The assault was so intense that it ruptured her abdomen, which probably caused her death.

The employee who found the bag, Cheng Yan Fong, 32, thought it contained books and brought it in.

“It was heavy but I thought nothing of it. Then I waited for my boss to arrive before asking him if it was his. That was when he opened the bag, and a leg fell out.” SHE had been brutally assaulted.

The victim, whose body was bundled into a bag and dumped in front of a staircase in Jalan PJS 1/48, Petaling Jaya Utama, had been sexually assaulted with foreign objects.

A post-mortem at Kuala Lumpur Hospital last night found traces of brinjal and cucumber in the anus and vagina.

Sources said the assault was so intense that it ruptured her abdomen, which probably resulted in her death.

The victim, believed to be between six and nine years old, was placed in a 1.2m-long sports bag in an upright position with both legs curled to her chest.

She was naked.

Those who found the body said it was clean. There were bruises on the neck and minor injuries on the legs but no traces of blood in the bag.

A woman in her 20s seen loitering in the area hours before the body was found may be able to shed light on the case.

Clad in a red top and a pair of black pants, the woman was caught on closed circuit television cameras hours before the body was found.

The camera was one of two installed by a workshop operator next to an office where the body was dumped. Police have seized the recordings and are analysing them.

Sources who saw the recordings said the woman was seen making her way down the stairs of an offi ce and entering a Perodua Kancil, driven by another person.

It could not be ascertained if the woman was carrying anything.

The identity of the victim has yet to be ascertained. Police did not find any missing person’s report which matched the victim.

Yeoh Huat Lip, 51, general manager of IMM Management Sdn Bhd, said the bag was found by a worker who arrived for work at 8.30am and brought it inside, thinking that it belonged to Yeoh since he had just returned from Singapore.

“I suspected there was something wrong when I caught a foul smell coming from the bag,” he said, adding that he and a worker had the shock of their lives when they saw a leg fall out after they unzipped the bag.

“I thought it was a prank, that it was a doll. But when I saw the fl ies and got a whiff of the stench, I realised it was a body,” he said.

The employee who found the bag, Cheng Yan Fong, 32, thought the bag contained books and brought it in.

“It was heavy but I thought nothing of it. Then I waited for my boss to arrive before asking him if it was his. That was when he opened the bag,” he said.

Petaling Jaya deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Shukor Sulong said the victim had short hair.

“We are still trying to ascertain her identity,” he said.

Mohd Shukor said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

He appealed to those with information to call 03- 79662222 or the nearest police station.
